Bio: Dr. Christopher B. Knaus is a race scholar, critical race theory practitioner, educator, and community advocate. He leads practitioner-based research projects that examine the global impact of colonial school systems and related policies on communities of color. Dr. Knaus additionally works to foster urban educator pathways, including developing teacher of color preparation and support programs in partnership with community-based organizations. At the core of community and systems transformation, Dr. Knaus centers critically conscious urban youth voice to help educators create inclusive, challenging classrooms and schools that arm children to transform the immediate world they live into a world where addressing social inequalities becomes the purpose of education.
Dr. Knaus was the founding director of the Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership Program at the University of Washington Tacoma, and previously served as faculty in the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, East Bay, and the African American Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Knaus was also a Fulbright Scholar to South Africa, where he was hosted by the University of the Western Cape. Dr. Knaus earned his Ph.D. from the University of Washington, his MA from Washington State University, and his BA from University of California Davis. In addition to numerous articles and three books about racism in education, Dr. Knaus has taught in high schools, runs to maintain a healthy outlook in an unhealthy world, and can be seen constantly writing in his journal.
Dr. Knaus is involved in GYOC because he recognizes that calls to diversify the educational workforce are necessary but insufficient to transform the racism and classism that shape school systems. He sees communities of color as holding the keys to transforming from schools as systemic exclusion and colonization and towards multilingual, multicultural, multiracial and intersectional liberatory healing.
